Music Parents Concessions Work Schedule

Thank you everyone for signing up to work and to those who have already worked!  Many of you have signed up more than once or twice!  If everyone signed up for one, we'd have more than enough on every shift and would make the work that much easier.  Please consider joining us!  It has been going well so far. This is our big fund raiser for the auditorium and improvements that we are making in there for everyone that uses it!  We really depleted our funds last year as we purchased a new set of 4 cordless mics to replace worn and outdated equipment, a sound effects machine, 1/3 the cost of new choral risers, and black material and supplies to create a new curtain to use in front of the backdrop.  So we are working to build that fund up to continue making improvements in equipment in our beautiful auditorium.

Christmas Recital Assignment - Band Students Grades 6 - 12

The Christmas Recital Assignment is required of all band students grades 6 - 12 and is due on Tuesday, January 3, 2012.  This assignment is worth 100 points!  All band students should take their instruments home and perform a recital for parents, friends, and relatives.  Please help your child(ren) find an appropriate time to perform for a supportive audience.  Parents, a suggestion would be to have your child(ren) perform prior to gift opening or for family gatherings.  Playing a solo in church is also encouraged and would meet the recital requirement.

Students should plan their selections ahead of time using the format below.  6th, 7th, and 8th graders can choose songs from their lesson books and/or band music.  Senior high students have been given holiday packets with several songs included.  Students can also perform solo/ensemble music.

Our Christmas Concert is coming up on Monday, December 19, 2011 @ 7:30 p.m.  Write 3-6 sentences in your own words as a summary of information about the song you are assigned.  Include what you like about the song, describe the mood of the piece, make a comparison of the melody to something the audience could visualize.  Your main goal is to share something of interest with our audience.

This assignment is worth 30 points!

Well written program notes must be typed and will contain:

15 points -  interesting facts, including titles of individual songs if it’s a medley.  For example, in Santa’s Excellent Adventure, “This medley includes the popular Christmas songs “Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town. Jolly Old Saitn Nicholas, etc.

15 points - Correct spelling, punctuation, grammar and sentence structure

Dairyland Honors Picture Gallery

Dairyland Honors Band & Choir 2011 is in the history books!  The concerts were well received by the near capacity crowd!  The long rehearsals on Tuesday and Saturday were well worth it to the students.  Their performance was a memorable one.  These pictures were taken during the Saturday rehearsal and right before the concert Saturday evening.  A huge thank you to the parents of the Whitehall Dairyland Honors students who donated the food and volunteered to serve for all 180 participants.  Enjoy the memories!

The Singing Standafers

Alia and Jackson Standafer are among elite musicians in the state of Wisconsin!  The Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) State Honors Music Project began in 1967 to provide musically talented youth with the opportunity to rehearse and perform with the nation’s finest conductors in a professional and highly disciplined setting.  Alia, through a rigorous 10 minute audition process, was selected from over 1,600 students for the privilege of being one of the 429 students selected for membership in the five prestigious High School State Honors ensembles.  As a member of the Honors Mixed Choir, Alia attended a 3 1/2/ day summer camp in Green Bay with distinguished choral conductor Dr. David Thye.  Dr. Thye is chair of Graduate Conducting at Southwestern Baptist theological Seminary and chorus master of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra.   In addition, some of Wisconsin’s finest music teachers volunteer their time as section coaches, coordinators, and administrators of these talented students during the June summer camp and at these October concerts.

The Whitehall School District supports the participation of choral director Krista Kjos, serving her first year as alto section coach with the mixed choir, and Jackie Goplin, completing her 12th year of service having served as flute/oboe section coach, band coordinator, and most recently on the administrative team as Chair of the Honors Project.  The concerts took place in the magnificent Overture Center in Madison at the Wisconsin Music Educators Conference on Thursday, October 27, 2011.  Alia commented,  ”I loved the overall experience of honors, I felt blessed to sing with such talented students and to be conducted by Dr. Thye was truly an honor.  I’ve gained many new friends and enjoyed the gorgeous pieces we sang.”

Jackson Standafer, also after a lengthy audition, was selected to participate in the Wisconsin Middle Level State Honors Choir.  Nearly 1,250 students in grades 6 – 8 auditioned last April for the privilege of being one of the 309 students selected for membership in the three prestigious WSMA Middle Level State Honors ensembles.  Music teachers, parents, administrators and the WSMA staff contribute time, talent and encouragement for every student involved in the Honors Project.  The effort and dedication required of each Honors participant results in a lifelong memory of their initiative, achievement and commitment to excellence as musicians and as our future leaders.

These students met for the first time early Friday morning, October 28, 2011.  They worked all day and into the evening with their conductor and section coaches.  The next morning after final dress rehearsals on Saturday morning, the choir, band and orchestra presented their concerts at 1 p.m. at the Marriott-Madison West convention center.  Conducting the choir was Jayne Glocke of the Penn State School of Music.  She is currently the conductor of the Women’s Chorale and Penn State Campus Choir.  Jackson says “my experience at the WSMA honors project was very exciting.  Although it took countless hours of rehearsal.  The outcome was unforgettable.  Our concert consisted of six songs.  Three of which were written in English, one in German, one an old English language, and one in a native Turkish language.  The songs were very enjoyable, the section leaders were very nice, our piano accompanist was incredibly gifted, and what made the experience most enjoyable was our director, Ms. Jayne Glocke!”

The Dairyland Honors Band & Choir Concert was Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 7 p.m. in the Whitehall Auditorium.   The choir director was Merlyn Aude, retired band and choir director from Plum City, Wisconsin.  The band director was Dave Mueller, long time band director at Eleva-Strum Schools now teaching at Chippewa Falls High School.

The students were selected based on their performance ability, attitude, and effort shown in their classes.  There were two rehearsals for this event, Tuesday, Nov. 8, 6:30 – 9 pm and Satuday 1 – 5 p.m.  The students then chill out over supper here at the high school, served by the Whitehall Music Parents.  Congratulations to the following students selected for the band:  Tess Johnson-flute, Olivia Schaefer-flute, Monica Skaar-1st chair clarinet, Yvette Peterson-clarinet, Mykayla Beighley-clarinet, Kennedy Harms-bass clarinet, Tommy Gierok-tenor sax, Wes Herried-1st chair french horn, Skyler Herman-trumpet, Anna Kopp-trumpet, Ethan Ringlien-1st chair trombone, Juel Gunderson-trombone, Brian Matthews-trombone, Trajan Schaub-tuba, Frank Ferdon-tuba.  Congratulations to the following students selected for the choir:  Kateyln Paulson, Cailyn Kneifl, Julia Halama, Alia Standafer, Megan Poulos, Kristine Lambright, Jordynn Anderson, Allison Anderson, Shandell Guthrie, Amanda Ringlien, Megan Engevold, Kole Dubiel, Andrew Lamberson, Carter Semb, Caleb Estenson, Joseph Kriese.

6th Grade Band - Wed., Sept. 28, 2011- "Power Rock"

Hey 6th grade band students and parents,  check out our first 'mini' performance at our rehearsal.  We can play a song already!  We wanted you to hear what's going on in the band room.  Students are working hard every Monday and Wednesday during 9th hour.  All 6th grade band students also have an individual lesson time one day a week during 1st hour.  Please know that we are making a lot of progress as a group, and we are moving forward in our lesson books.  Help your child get some practice time at home.  That might mean helping them remember to bring instruments and music home!  Hope you enjoy our first recording!
